The Sword

I donned my chain mail and fastened my sword
Now, I mount my steed and embark down the path
Through the mist that we have ridden so many times before
The path is the same, but yet it is different

Weathered and weary, we ride
On the top of the mountain, a figure awaits
As we draw closer, the enemy grew larger
Fear, terror, and horror clinch me like never before
Leaping from my steed, as my blade slices through the air
The meeting of our blades, sound like thunder
The enemy’s strength seemed to be more than I can bear
With precision, I counter, as I step over the fallen

By his mighty blow, I am dropped to my knees
Wondering how much more I can take
The oath I swore to the faith steadies my hand
The battles raged for what seemed like days, but it was only moments

The visor opened as it hit the ground
I release a howl, as his fingers rip through my chain mail and into my flesh

My eye burn from the sweat of my brow
Panting, as I remember each time I drew my blade
What I was allowing to live, not what I destroyed
Courage alone had guided me through many battles

Yet, I realized it was not courage alone on this day
Luck was alongside today,
Sometimes luck is all a man needs if his courage hold
Finally, I look into the face of this enemy

Clinching my chest, horrified
My screams echo across the countryside
I ask myself, what is this, I see?

I see me …
